Ok a set of rebated french doors , 95mm stiles , 12mm rebate . The gap between the doors has got to be in the middle making the two stiles look the same size when the doors are closed........ It cant be done , can it

you can't have two overlapping edges, so although the doors without the rebate can be central, one is always going to be slightly bigger than the over to cover the join maybe it's a brunette moment ;D paul

It cant be done , can it I'd do it by planting on moulded strips like a staff bead, in place of the rebate. The bead then lies dead centre from either side, in or out. The proper way to do it is ditto but solid; make BOTH the meeting stiles 12mm bigger than the hinge side, rebate, then mould the other side so the moulding lies central. You could argue that the hinge side stile is hidden by 12mm of rebate so it doesn't matter about losing a bit on the lock side, but it looks wrong nevertheless. cheers Jacob

Yup i talked about the bead with Colin C last night but the stile is still bigger although with the bead it looks right . So i am right , it cannot be done can it .

Jacob's way (from solid) is how our original victorian french doors are done. The bead distracts the eye and makes it look balanced.

You can put beads all over it but it still doesnt make the timber the same sizes does it ;D Yes it does. You have 2 identical doors. Instead of rebating the meeting edges you stick a staff bead towards the front of one edge, forming a rebate, then ditto towards the back of the other edge, forming another opposite rebate. Then when you put them together the centre of the bead will lie on the centre line between the doors, but the stiles are still identical, plus the staff bead stuck on. Or to look at it another way - you hang your 2 identical doors, leaving a gap between them of about 14mm (12mm rebate + clearance) then close the gap with the two staff beads set opposite each other and fixed on opposite doors. Staff beads 12mm x (half thickness of door less clearance). This means one door has to open first, but this is the usual arrangement, with the other door fixed with tower bolts etc. Does that make sense ;D cheers Jacob

Your right, just making the illusion, wether it be a bead and butt or a shallow reabate of 12mm.
