Welcome to the March, 2008 issue of the Sawdust Making 101 Newsletter.
Forget all the jokes about making sawdust, this lowly commodity we treat like garbage has become a hot item, it is now selling for more than $100 per ton in some markets. The slumping housing market is to blame, less construction means less trees cut, which means less sawdust is produced. The Wall Street Journal has an article about this looming shortage and how it is affecting some industries:

When guys like Gary K. build birdcages like this out of a single 2X4 it doesn't do much to contribute to the sawdust pile either:

David Savage trained to be an artist and a painter, then became a furniture maker by paying for the priviledge of working in a couple shops to learn the trade. He was a good student by the looks of his work and now has a school of his own:

This Nissan powered lathe is quite a machine, it is used to turn logs into Djembe drums:

If you ever need to design a wooden gear Matthias Wandel has a template generator on his site, even if you don't have a need to design one there is lots of other great information on his page:
woodgears.ca/gear_cutting/template.html
John Fry posts his work on the Wood Net Forums, this is a coffee table ensemble he built, each detailed post of his projects has a link to another one:

I have provided a free downloadable .pdf image of a 13 X 19 Table Saw Safety Shop Poster on our table saw page, it features the original 1941 Unisaw patent drawing as a background. You will need a wide format inkjet to print it that size, it may also be printed 8.5 X 11 on a regular printer.

Got a few more Mission Style plans added to the vintage section, they are marked with a red "New":

Run out of ideas and want to browse through some plans, you will find hundreds of them that cost you nothing at Absolutely Free Plans:
absolutelyfreeplans.com
For other craft ideas visit Do-It-101.com, a do-it-yourself index to just about anything:

In closing I would like to remind you to work safely and remember:
"If it doesn't feel good, don't do it."
