Hi guys I have been tasked with making a 'Leader Board' which is like a noticeboard but where names are permanently painted on each year. I haven't got much to go on so I have kinda slung something together. Construction is oak frame (5ftx3ft) with 9m oak veneered panel. Some sort of cornice or moulding is required for the top and bottom. I'd like to buy this as I want this job out of the workshop ASAP. Question is: Where do I buy this stuff? All I can come up with is scotia, which is too small. Any tips on this construction would be most appreciated.

I have a Trend cornice router bit that I use for this sort of thing, runs it out no problem, have done several 100 mts with the one bit in both solid wood & MDF. Must be table mounted, wealden do a few profiles as well.
I'll try and find a photo of some boards I did for a golf club, may have to scan a print, stay tuned

I've also done a few of these and as Jason says you can buy the router cutters off the shelf ( not cheap ) I normally make my surround moulding and rebate it so the ply can be fitted from the back and the fixings are hidden . I'm pretty sure this is the cutter i used for the mouldings , i also use it if i need a cornice . www.axminster.co.uk/recno/1/product-CMT-Classic-Moulding-Cutter-21026.htm

Thanks guys, I was beginning to think that this sort of thing was unusual. I was hoping not to make my own profiles, mainly down to speed. My router table is in bits at the moment, waiting for a rebuild. I need this job out of the workshop within a couple of days as I want to concentrate on my own stuff. Am I likely to find pre-made Oak mouldings like this? Are they extortionate? If they are wildly expensive then it looks like I will be rebuilding the RT this weekend

It wont be easy to find off the shelf, I had some cornice run out about a year ago in oak, think it was about £7.50 a meter (but the total order with other mouldings etc was approx £2.5k) If you only want a few mts then it will be pricy. You could consider kitchen cornice but would then have to colour match your MDf & trim to match. Heres the captains board I did, there where half a dozen honours boards to go with it but not as elaborate. this is the cutter I used. No-one has knocked that golf ball off the Tee shaped finial yet Jason

Hi Wizer . . . A decent Timber supply house should have any number of mouldings you could use alone, or make up using two (or more) for a particular profile. They shouldn't run you much depending on how glamorous you want it to be! Heck, even B&Q sell them in their bigger warehouse stores

Very fancy Jason, like it! I'm unlikely to run this sort of profile again, which is why I was reluctant to buy cutters. I guess I will have to put together the router table and lookup timber prices. Do these cutters come with instructions? I found this set on Wealden, will this do what I want?

The problem with honour boards is people walk up and stare at them . Normally the names are put on in Gold leaf so a few mouldings from B&Q is going to stick out like a sore thumb as everyone has seen them and can get them . They need to look classy but not over done .

Can't see a cornice profile on the chart!
Actually they are quite small cutters, the "B" dimension is only 21mm so I think any profile will be too small and fiddly.

Not much help perhaps, but mouldings like that are no prob on a spindle with dead cheap home made cutters cheers Jacob

Thanks Roger. Just called both. BHW can do it but not in stock so will have to wait a few weeks until they have a large enough order (obviously won't run just 3 or 4m). Southgate don't do cornice, only smaller bits of moulding. I'm going to try the local timber yards but I'm not hopeful.

Local glazing firm have offered to run a bit out for me. Not cheap, not cheap at all. But i'm not paying and it will get this job completed quick.

Why don't you try a local kitchen maker/ joiner? Also give Winther Browne a ring 0845 612 1893. They have a lot of cornice profiles and say they will make in any material. Also Richard Barry used to do oak cornice - it shows up if you search on the website but its not on the main listing: www.richardbarry.co.ukCheers Tim

Thanks Tim, I knew it must be available somewhere. I will call them and get a quote. The local glazing firm offered to do it but I think I was looking at near on £50 for an 8ft run.
