I want to make one of these: but don't really know how to make a cylinder of that size. I made a much shorter box once before out of ply by kerfing it but wondered if the kerfing works in MDF and how easy it would be to veneer something that shape. Thanks for any help Mike

Mike,
You can buy Bendi Ply & Bendi MDF, if they are speakers I would keep away from the the MDF.
The ply bend pretty good but would need some finish as it is not very smooth.

I would make up mdf formers and joint them together with 2x1 notched into them . Then clad it with bendy ply , bendy mdf or birch ply .

Those look like veneered bendy MDF.(silvermans) Bendy ply of 12mm or above wouldn't bend that far and would crack (in my experience)

Silvermans do Bendi Ply in 5mm and 8mm.
The problem with the Bendi MDF is that the open grooved create a material that is not suitable for speakers, it needs to be dense.
I have made PA systems for the Pink Floyd and the Who, they were all made from birch ply.... How about glueing and rolling thin birch ply over a former.

I made this out of birch ply by kerfing it in my RAS and it would probably work for a taller cylinder but I can't think of an accurate and repeatable way of making the kerfs. Mike

Hey Mike
That looks like an interesting job, or is it a personal toy.

I'll give you an alternative often used in architectural work. It is possible to buy cardboard tubes in various diameters and thicknesses (up to 25mm thick wall, up to 5 metres long and up to about 2 metres in diameter) form specialised board makers such as Sonoco-Alcore. These are extremely strong and formn a good ground for veneering

Interested in this project sawdust. I take it you are making speakers? Did you find a solution?

Interested in this project sawdust. I take it you are making speakers? Did you find a solution? Wizer, I priced up Sonotube which is what a lot of the guys in the States use but it was too expensive so I have gone for a simpler conventional cabinet. It's a subwoofer for my AV system and is almost finished. I'll post some pics when it is. Cheers Mike

If you were feeling patient, you could cooper it like barrel-makers do and smooth it afterwards. Although you'd then have many exposed joints rather than one. I suppose you could veneer it afterwards.
Cheers, Craig
