As I've no doubt said I'm off out doing a lot of heavy installation work of late where there is a need to set-up blocks to hang stuff onto walls. We're using plastic packers for all sorts of things (although that still doesn't mean we've abandoned the use of wooden spacers) and I've been reminded about the versatility of these packers for all sorts of tasks. The colours we use are:
5 mm -- Cream 3 mm -- Blue 2 mm -- Green 1.5 mm -- White 1 mm -- Yellow
For example you set-up a crosscut fence on the table saw or chop saw and need to reduce the cut by 1.5mm but your machine doesn't have a ruler (or the ruler is pants)? Then just add a 1.5mm (white) packer to the face of the stop. Cut length too short? If you start with a cream packer fixed to the front of the stop it will be possible to increase the length of the piece in 0.5mm increments from 0.5 mm to about 4.0mm by simply swapping packers around. Easier to use than veneer strips and best of all they're calibrated

Scrit - great idea...where can you obtain packers like this? Would be very useful to have a set in the 'shop - Rob

Hi Rob, To save yourself buying a whole pack of shims, any Upvc window fitter or Upvc window manufacturer should be able to give you a few of each. Just ask them for a couple of different size glass packers. ;D Cheers, Gazza.
