since in part it was my thread on measuring which helped jacob in his movement off the ukw site, i thought to ask him to show me how am actually interested in using a rod, an my next project will involve a smallish table. 600 high, 300 x350 top, with 4 legs and a lower shelf at 150 off the ground. otherwise, no other fixed dimensions so how do i lay it out??? for elegance as well as strength. how do you gauge how thick your table legs should be for instance?? the top will be about 19mm thick. paul

BTW I'm more a joiner than furniture maker but have done bits and bobs. First you need to sort out your ideas on the design. What made of, what have you got? Solid wood top? How constructed e.g. edge joined boards, frame with flush panel, ply with edging? etc Legs connected to an apron of some sort? There is no particular way to "guage" the legs - could be really thin hardwood say min 20mm square, to fat as you like. Tapered? Moulded or bevelled edges? Turned? etc. Best source of info on what and how, is another table if you can find one i.e. copy something handy that you fancy. Next best is a picture from a book or magazine. Don't go down the "creative" path and assume you have somehow got to spirit up a design from the back of your head; what's the point when millions of highly skilled craftsmen have already looked at all the options? Look look look copy copy copy; the quickest way to learn about design and construction. If you could work out a few details and dimensions - rough sketch back of envelope etc, I could draw up a demo rod and post photos. Interesting exercise perhaps. cheers Jacob

Agreed, what I used to do was find scraps of, well pretty much anything, MDF, ply, timber and make a model, then sort of wittle it down or add bits until I had what I wanted. If you want to go down that road I have mdf a plenty( I hoard offcuts)

i tried three different ways to load the image, so can someone please explain it properly for us older dimbos at this time all i seem to be able is to move the image into a jpeg file, and try and import that here, but what you see is what i have ended up with. mind you, since i make models, you could think the the table is scaled too ;D paul
