If you're really serious abou' pimpin' yo tv cab brother, get yo' woodworkin' ass down to www.letsautomate.com and check out deze amazin' fings, man... Robotic vacuum cleaner - which will obviously need a Thunderbird 2 style automatic hidey-hole www.letsautomate.com/index.cfm?&Nav=Roboticand then you'll want to have... www.letsautomate.com/12186.cfm?&A colour screen control panel so you can open and close the curtains, have the lights dim when you turn on the telly and all those other necessary mod-cons that you'll suddenly realise you need when you start browsing this site... Hehehehehehe. I do rather like the idea of a little R2D2 coming out from behind a kicking-board to suck up the crumbs I always drop when I have a bag of crisps ;D Cheers, Lee

Isn't it recommended that you should back light your tv these days, something to do with eye strain. (look here) Obviously you don't want to be messing around with switches, so it should turn on when the doors are opened (remotely of course). It would probably be nice if there was a delay too just for full the full effect. Where are the speakers? Must be room in there for some discreet speakers. None of your sub and satellite nonsense either, big speakers, mans speakers! How about some remote control extenders so that you dont spoil the beautiful lines of those well fitted doors Cheers Sainty

I have more ;D It feels odd making something for myself , like its still not mine and will be going any day I need to get the shelves made and the doors sprayed before i get side tracked by paid work !!! P.s. Breaking the base units down into 3 worked a treat as the doors hide any paint cracks . The top took three lifts as it was hard to get a grip on the back . That coupled with the weight has got me thinking about trying to break this type of thing down even more , but i'm not sure how without it showing .

That is very nice - I love the chunky feel of it.
I want to see it when it's done! ;D
My boss and I are going to make a similar big TV unit out of painted MDF and oak but no drawers or cupboard doors. I'll post the sketchup pictures in a new thread in a moment, and the work in progress pics as they happen in a month or so.
Cheers, Craig

Well paid work got in the way but i managed to get the draws and doors sprayed . I also fitted the Hafele soft closers to the hinges , they seem to work fine . Just the plinth and shelves to do now . Not sure i like the handles

Well i'm not sure if it should be shown here at all. ;D On another thread, MDF is apparently 'not for joiners' Looks excellent Jason, but you really do need to cut a tree or two up if you want credibility! ;D Andy

;D Andy i've said it before and i'll say it again . To discount MDF as a material is foolish . Making something like this from solid timber would also be foolish as all sorts of problems will appear over time . I earn my living from carpentry and joinery ( more joinery now ) and i choose the best materials for the job at hand . If that material is Teak then i use Teak , if it's MDF then i use MDF .

jason that looks really nice. thought about splitting the top unit, is this maybe not a reason for making a faux face frame if you made the unit about 18mm less deep, then you could make a frame which goes over the joins. like you i think when painting it is dumb to use "real" wood which will move and mark and not necessarily look any better. paul

Lovin' your work ,JFC. I can see what you mean about the handles. I think its more about the placement and the double drawer in the middle. I think it would look good with a light in the middle shelf lighting up behind the TV.

Paul , even with a false frame you can see the joints . That was the whole point of using the mitre lock cutter with MDF . By locking the joints on a man made board there is very little movement where as face framing always shows end grain and cracking on MDF and shrinkage on solid timber . With solid timber i normally leave a small lip proud rather than trying to make it flush incase of shrinkage .
The handles are growing on me , they are chrome and do look smart......... Ahhh well they are there now !!!!
