Finished this before Christmas - bit nervous about showing it I made it to house my (growing) collection of knives. It took me so long to getting around to making it, that it is now practically full and I will have to work on building another! For a first go, I'm pleased with it, but I think that is down to the beauty of the oak!

looks good mate, especially for a first effort. my only comment would be next time to try and match the grains a little more carefully, but the effect is certainly stunning. keep posting and keep finishing ;D paul

Some really nice wood there Frank . . . . . very well done. I actually like the 'vivid' effect of the differing grain. I would however have a think (or a re-think) about the top. It looks very heavy and maybe a little bland at the moment. You could always do some nice edge molding to lighten it up a little But overall an excellent looking piece

Hi Effigy,
Really like that, has the feeling of a serious hunk o' tree about it. Like somebody's already mentioned, I'm in the matching grain camp, but I know from experience it's hard to remember when you're up to your neck in glue, joinery and design thoughts.
Look forward to seeing your next project - this is a great early work.
Cheers,
Lee

at the risk of complaining too much the second time around, i wonder whether it might be better to have drawer handles with more of a patina on them, to reduce the "glow" paul

Thanks for the comments - much appreciated. I originally thought that the chest would be portable enough for me to take along to shows etc, but it weighs a bloody tonne empty! The oak is absolutely beautifull - I bought it from Isca Hardwoods in their sale. As regards the matching grain, after c*cking up the lid first time round, I was down to salvaging what I could. The draw fronts were ripped from two pieces that remained It has polished up really well, and I am a convert to working with oak.

Effigy, It looks really good, sturdy and strong. Would have made the drawer handles slightly smaller, but that is an opinion and does not detract from the great work you have done. Enjoy.
