Well I have had a full day on the cutlery canteen today and managed to make a lot of progress. I sorted out the twisted drawer and got it fitted. Cut panel lines on the drawer fronts and fitted the lid. After making a start on the drawer internals I did test fitting of some of the cutlery just to make sure, better safe than sorry at this stage. I wanted to make a feature of the serving set as this only contained seven pieces so cut housings into MDF which sits in the top compartment. This took a few hours to accomplish using the router free hand but was worth the effort I think. This shot shows the top false drawer that opens with the lid. I am now waiting for the felt to arrive for the drawer liners and after the finish I shall have fun fitting that, until then it is a lot of sanding ahead for me.

Mailee - are you going to use Felt for everything, including slots and cut-outs, or have you thought about that 'Flock' stuff, which I've used once or twice with excellent results?

Thanks guys for the comments. I am enjoying building this I have to admit. Now Roger, about this flock, I have heard of it but know nothing about it. Please tell me more Where to get it, how much is it, how to use it? Sounds like it could be just what I am after. I was intending to use felt sheet but have to say I didn't fancy all those nooks and crannies in there. I am assuming it is a type of spray on substance?

don't know what roger is recommending, however think that hobby craft would be a good place to look, if you have one within the lincolnshire area paul

Hi Mailee. The trade name is Suede Tex and you can get it from Turners Retreat: Turners Retreat Suede TexThere are several reviews of it on the Rockler site with more details: Rockler Suede texit's excellent for exactly the type of job you have or restoration of those, saving all the cutting and gluing of tiny pieces of felt which invariably come loose again

Thanks very much Roger, I have ordered the starter set in Emarald green. It does sound quite easy to use and I am hoping there is enough for the full canteen in one kit. It will certainly be much better than using felt material and as you say risk it coming loose. Will let you know how I get on with it.

I'd be interested to know how it goes and your thought on it for heavy use .

I finally managed to get the finish on the canteen at last: I applied three coats of Danish oil and a final coat of wax. I have also started making the knobs as the customer stated she would like wooden ones to match the canteen: I am afraid you will have to excuse the poor turning as it has been a while since I have done any. I did intend to use the same Oak for these but it was too course grained for such fine work so ended up using Beech for them. I shall colour them to match the canteen once they are finished. Three made and only another seven to go! Once these are finished I can then have a go at flocking the inside, that should be a laugh.

Beautiful Mailee, sure the customer is very happy! Just for my own interest how many total hours do you reckon you have spent on this?

I have no idea really Thallow. I have been on it off and on between other jobs and have now spent two weekends and around three hours per night this week. If I was in business I would not make anyh money at these that is for sure! I find that there is more work making a minature than the full size article. Still I have enjoyed every minute of it and that is what counts. ;D
