A couple of years ago, when we were in Cameroon, I ordered a carving from an old guy in Foumban, a town in the west of the country renowned for it's carvings. It is a typical depiction of a village scene and took him about 4 weeks to do. It is 100cm long and 38cm wide. We had it hanging on the wall in our last home but here it has been sitting in a cupboard. A couple of weeks ago I decided the time had come to do something with it so I've incorporated it into a coffee table. The table is made from Iroko (I think) planned to 6cm x 6cm. The rails are mortice and tenoned into the legs. The bottom shelf is 2 boards jointed with biscuits and held in place with pocket screws - as is the top. I routed a 10mm x 10mm rebate in the top rails to take a piece of 8mm plate glass. Sorry no WIP pictures Any comments appreciated. Steve

nice one steve, just be sure about not putting any coffee on the coffee table ;D you need to be sure about stopping any moisture getting under the glass and damaging the carving which looks really good too. actually it is a toss up as to which enhances which most. paul

Steve
That's a clever idea to do justice to the carving and your table looks the business.
Regards.

Thanks for all your positive comments. I enjoyed making it and it went together without any problems. I think that I have finally got things like chisel and plane sharpening and machine setup to a point where a project like this, that a year ago would have been a struggle, is now pretty straight forward. This is in great part due to the knowledge that i have acquired here - so thanks!

That is beautiful Steve, I really like it and may steal the idea in the future. One of my customers collects James Bond toys and want's somewhere to show them, this might be just the ticket.

Must go with the consensus here. Lovely clean lines, nice solid job, and I wish I could carve like that! Regards John
