It's blade buying time again so has anyone got any recommendations on replacement blades for #5 and #5-1/2 size planes? The #5 is easy enough, but the #5-1/2 is a pre-1942 Record so has a 2-1/4in blade not the later 2-3/8in one. Other than getting Ray Iles to make me a blade for that is there anyone doing an off the shelf blade? Also, does anyone have any preferences between Clico (Victor), Hock, Iles, Lie-Nielsen and Veritas - and are there any other brands I should consider. Decisions, decisions Scrit

Hi Scrit, I have Clifton blades and cap irons fitted to all my planes and I think they are great - although I haven't tried the other blades you mention. However, I found that the two Record planes that I have them fitted to needed the Y lever extended in order to engage properly with the slot in the cap iron (the Clifton blades are 3.1mm thick). On older Record planes it's possible to extend the Y lever by silver soldering a piece of steel to the end of the Y lever. Rob (fingers55) did this for me and it's been very successful. On some planes the Y levers are made of softer metal and they can melt, so you need to be careful Cheers Paul

Hi Scrit
I have a Samurai blade in my #7 and I am very happy with it, it also has a Clifton cap iron.
I have not used any of the other blade that you mentioned.

Scrit,
You can get 2.4mm 95 thou blades in either carbon or A2 from L-N and Hock, Ray Iles does nice D2 and carbon if you wish? at appropriate thickness, which you can also negotiate!
ooops forgot tht Veritas may also have.
In alll these cases go direct to manufacturer to ensure correct width & thickness, they will not charge extra. So many people order carelessly from APTC or Tilgear or Classic and then find that the extra thickness of L-N standard blades is an issue, which causes more problems. The 2.4 mm blades are on the site labeled as 'original' and these are suitable thickness for most old planes.
I don't understand why so many like Victor, they don't seem to hold an edge long to me, and the extra thickness is likely to cause Y lever problems.
I become more and more convinced that sucess with A2 D2 & M2 is directly linked to ones sharpening method.
Samurai were nice and hard but thin and not very flat. They were the best option many years ago but no longer in my opinion.

Yes - Ron Hock does one in O1 (which I have and am very happy with) and LN in cryo A2 - may be others but I'm not aware of them. For more standard sizes I'd give LV some consideration, simply 'cos they do all that work on the backs these days and it makes for a very quick iron to get into commission. Cheers, Alf

I got one from LV before they did the back flatening and it was wonderful then.
Probably even better now.

David Hi David If you use the rule trick on your plane irons, why would it make a big difference if the back is on that flat? I must have been lucky as mine did not take long to flatten the back Ps I have not had any chatter from as well.

Colin,
Ruler trick does not replace back flattening, just means I can stop at 800 grit.
Samurai was good and hard but I much prefer the thicker blades. This was immediately apparant on a Stanley 60 1/2.

David I guess I would have to use one to see what you mean about thicker blades as I have been very happy with the Samurai Blade, plus I got it new from a carboot for £5 Just kicking myself for not getting some more

The thing with Ray Ilse is that if you can afford to loose your plane for a few days, Ray will fit an iron to give what ever mouth you would like. He did an super job on my A5. I have a couple LV planes and the blades were very flat and needed no real work at all. Have not tried the others. I did get a new blade from Jim Reed which arrived smaller than ordered and with the slot misaligned - still trying to get that sorted out?
