as a separate thread can you help me with white oak in board form
white oak is american SO.................................
my simple mind says they saw it to imperial dimensions and thickness it to imperial sizes
i have two suppliers of white oak boards
Bexley hardwoods, their finished dimensions of a 1 inch board is 20mm
SL Hardwoods, their finished dimenson of a 1 inch board is 19mm
why does this difference occour
i dont believe that SL Hardwoods plane an additional 1mm off for the fun of it

1 inch = 25mm So therefore if they are calculating the board cost based on 1" and actually selling you 19mm or 20mm, then you are being done in! But the other problem is that when scaling your projects you could be way out in dimensions if you base it on 1" and get a lot less. Even in the civilised world of metrication, you can still ask for a 6x4 and you will get its metric equivilent. The USA world ends at their borders, and they will probably never metricate. (unless there is an oil supply that GWB has spotted!) Whenever i make anything based on USA plans, i rescale it all to metric and see if it hangs together.

The thing you must remember with SLH is all the PAR hardwood they have in the shop is for the hobbiest who just wants one or two boards and can't prepare it him/her self. The prices on the web are only a rough guide and you will get sold whats in stock.
Most of those boards are spare boards from their joinery workshop (JSM Joinery)as they started out just selling offcuts from there.
I usually buy sawn boards from them and then only ones they order in as I don't like the way the wood is stored outside. If I do want PAR I will I will get a price for exactly what I need.
Regarding the size of PAR it really depends on what the sawn boards come in like if they are good then you may only need 2mm of each face , but 3mm is more the norm. That is why its good to be able to machine your own as you can take it down to what you want.
