Thanks Jacob I am doing the top and bottom vertical bar with a 50mm stop tenon rather than a through and wedged tenon . My thinking is i dont want end grain where there is more chance of water sitting and also with shrinkage in years to come the tenon could foul the door/frame . I have seen this happen a few times on old joinery . Do you think i would gain any strengh by making these through and wedged tenons ?

Just had another look. You mean the short ones at the end of the diamonds? I'd give them as long a tenon as poss to make them stiffer, but no point in wedging one end if the other end isn't also wedged into a rail. But if they spanned through horizontally then wedging both ends would keep everything together a bit firmer.
cheers Jacob

I'm planning on stop tenons top and bottom and the rest of the vertical bars will be butt jointed and doweled with one dowel into each of the diamonds glazing bars . The horizontal bars will be scribe jointed and doweled again with one dowel into each of the opposing glazing bars . On the side rails they will be wedged mortice and tenons . The idea of the butt and scribe joints is to have the most material i can to get two dowels into .

Yes working but i must lose a day a week sorting out admin stuff . Making sure the glazier knows what day i will be dropping in templates so he can book me in , checking when the timber yard has a new delivery so i get the pick of the best stock for the next job etc . The list goes on and every thing takes 20 mins . Before you know it the day has gone

Bit of a set back today as i walked into the workshop this morning and the timber i picked to make the stiles just wasnt good enough . I bought it as 5.7m thinking i could get straight bits out of it but looking this morning i decided no . Not to worry as it will get put into stock as it is already moulded and used for smaller work like replacement windows etc . Anyway i called the yard to get some milled up and they where already on a big job so i tried another yard . I went through there whole rack of red wood and even the white wood but nothing was straight Three racks in two yards and no straight 4x2 , whats going on Luckly the first yard called back and had managed to start milling me up some new stuff but even two of the eight i need are border line . I was helping the machinest ( shhhhhhhhh) and he said they only order in 2" sawn so he has nothing to play with . Looking at the sawn timber i could see his point . Anyway back to where i was a day ago and a couple of hundred quid richer Morticing the stiles for the glazing bars ....again..........Yawn Moticing the stiles ........ Woooohoooooo , tool time ;D

First dry fit . and then the rest of the day tweaking everything . You can see from the picture that some of the bars are not quite right . The main problem i had is the amount of glue on my floor was making the rrrrrrr.... the rrrrrrrrrrrrr ..... the template uneven so i knocked up a level bench to work on . That racked out wall is so handy I think i have it sussed At lunch time today i was thinking these had me beat but i got there in the end .
