Bin over there again (I know I know ) summink to do while I have a cup of tea! He wants to plane some B&Q rubbish softwood for a project. The advice he's getting is to plane some other wood - which kinda misses the point IMHO ;D He's also advised that it could be bad for his planes! Different priorities obviously - he wants to plane some wood, they want to play with planes ;D ;D Personally I'd say rubbish softwood would be one of the best materials for getting your hand in with a plane - relatively easy but with a few testing problems, and cheap so you needn't worry too much about spoiling it. cheers Jacob

jacob you must stop this habit of glooming over there ;D i do agree though that if you ask a question the answer you get should not be don't do it that way harry enfield where are you when needed ;D mind you it is a good way to learn about your cheap plane. paul

I bought some t&g flooring in France - 11m board length, €7.90. Good price, ropey quality, until planed up. Didn't hurt the planes, and OK for my kind of woodwork (making country-style bookshelves for a holiday home).
There's too much tool fairy sometimes. And making people who can't do really good stuff feel a bit inadequate. I'd love to do engineering-quality cabinet cabinet making, but I can't. As a result I feel very inhibited about talking about what I do make.
edit - soddit, I'll post that over there.

How naive can you get?
A plane is a shiny thing that goes on a shelf (often in a sock) and is only taken out once a week for a nice massage with camellia oil, or possibly ambergris. At Christmas it is anointed with myrrh.
The sole is lapped to within an inch of its life, the cutter is honed, bevelled, back bevelled and polished before being sharpened and bevelled again. The handles are made of sapient pearwood and the body cast in solid poundnotium.

So using one to knock in a pin when you cant reach your hammer is a big no no then ;D Unless I'm very much mistaken, the stanley No.4 can be used to drive 4" nails, the No.5 for 5" etc. If you want to use ring shanks, you need the "1/2" version, i.e. the Stanley No. 4 1/2 for 4" ring shanks. rgds Stu

That has to be a wind up! According to what he's posted, he's trying to 'flatten' a piece of batten - 3ft long, 1 1/2 x 3/4, using a try plane, a jack plane and a scrub plane! Dunno where the scrub plane fits in here, let alone a try - the jack would sort it on its own if he's that desperate... I really must stop planing knotty pine if it plays havoc with planes though - You learn something new every day! ;D

Please take care that all such posts are, in the future, preceded by a warning that Tool Fairies might find them distressing.

What made me laugh was the advice to use a different wood. It's a bit like that Irish joke (sorry Irish people everywhere) where someone stops to ask the way and the old chap says "well sorr if I was setting off for Ballybunion I wouldn't start from here"
cheers Jacob

but jacob it isn't a joke, one time in dublin i asked for directions and was given the same answer as someone who has some of the modern "classics" i thought planes were universal, in that their job was to plane wood. any wood the only sensible answer is that some thinks all the resin in shed pine will gum up the works ;D paul

We do the same in Derbyshire if there are strangers about - it's not malicious, it just makes us laugh. "Sorry me owd, weers that then I've never erd a Stoke Newington" etc cheers Jacob

I'm getting pretty fed up with it, to be honest.
I didn't really have a problem with the place when you lot left. I don't think I'd been around enough to pick up the politics. But I'm seeing it now.
I think the best way Charlie can sort the place out is to shut down the general chat section.
My woodwork is halfway between a bodge and a car crash, but at least I do some. There are too many people over there who don't.
